Early Second Language Acquisition (ESLA) is a must for ECE teachers who will develop their careers within 21st century society, where bilingual education is at the heart of Europe and European educational policies. There is no attempt at any European policy document to promote a lingua franca to the detriment of any indigenous European language. “Every European should have meaningful communicative competence in at least two languages in addition to his or her mother tongue. This is an ambitious goal, but all the progress already made by several Member States shows that this is attainable” (European Commission 2003, p. 10). So, the policies of the EC are in line with many of the main objectives of PETaL EMJMD.
